Web versions will be discussed in the order that they appear on the NRC web site:

XML version (primarily used by Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher  browser users)

• Links to specific chapters and sections within chapters
• Good navigational bars to move between chapters
• Ability to click on link to another standard when in an existing standard.
  • Example: you are in Standard 3.008 regarding sleep position; there is a “see Standards 5.146” for information on appropriate bedding.  You can click on that link and it will take you directly to Standard 5.146.
• Ability to directly link to a reference citation for further follow up.
  • Example: you are in Standard 5.242 regarding safety helmets; you want to find out more information from the reference that says “every year 200 children are killed by bicycle related injuries”; you click on the reference # 71 and it takes you directly to the bibliographic reference from the National Safe Kids Campaign.
• Ability to go to the links listed in the Index to the place in the standards where that subject is addressed.
  • Example- you want to see where sunscreen is mentioned; when you click on page 51, you will go directly to Standard 2.009 about playing outdoors.

HTML version (primarily for Netscape 3.0 or higher browser users)

Same attributes as the XML version – developed so that Netscape users could access.

• Ability to search entire document using the find command (Binoculars icon).
  • Example: Looking for syrup of ipecac – clicking on binoculars and entering the word “ipecac” would take you to pages 115, 226, 360, 434, 493.
• Has navigational Table of Contents on the left side when you open the document so you can easily click between chapters.  (Hint: clicking the plus sign to the left of the chapter will open the table of contents to the subsections within the chapter – allowing you to go directly to one of the subsections.)
• Easy to print a page or group of pages
• Can download to laptop or PDA (i.e. Palm Pilot)

• Looks just like the printed version since it is a “picture” of the book
